A letter to my daughter
Ever since my wife and I found out we were going to be parents, I’ve thought about how being a father would change my life and what my role in shaping the life of another human would entail. As I look back through my notes and documents, from the past few months, I found the first letter that I wrote to my daughter.
I want to share this because I am really proud of myself for having written these words at that time. It may not be Pulitzer Prize-winning writing, but I have so often struggled to connect emotionally with people and to express my feelings even with those I care about deeply. On this day, I found the inspiration and gathered the courage to write from my heart and to give my daughter this gift of my thoughts and feelings as an expectant father.
Here are my words from June 2023…
Today, your mom told me that you are the size of an avocado (who came up with these comparisons anyway). You’re growing so fast! I cannot wait to meet you and hold you for the very first time.
You have already been such a bright spot in my life. I feel an enormous love and warm feelings for you just anticipating being your dad.
I am starting to think about all the fun things we will experience together! So many “firsts” that I will see you accomplish; from your first steps, first words, to your first time driving and even dating. You have the world at your fingertips, and I am so thrilled to be alongside you as you blaze a path and find meaning, contentment, and purpose.
I have been thinking a lot about my own meaning and purpose lately.
You being born will be a significant new purpose in my life. I know that you will learn a lot about life from people other than me, but I have a sense of duty to impart what I have learned and to give you all the support that I can.Be sweet.
Love Always,
Dad
Thanks for reading. So long for now.
