Tending to the garden
This morning was the last appointment with the OB/GYN before either the baby comes on her own or we go to the hospital for inducement. At this point in the pregnancy, my wife and I are well past ready for her to come. I’m sure we’re not alone in this!
When I got home, after writing my morning pages a bit late today because of the appointment, I stepped outside to water the plants in the landscape. As I pulled the hose out from the side of the house, I thought about the mystery and beauty of plant life.
Some plants are so fragile that without being watered daily will wilt and dry up quickly. Others are hardy and thrive in the least hospitable conditions. Established trees want for little, while small seedlings need controlled environments.
The role of the gardener is that of a caretaker. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. The food is curated to the species and the sun exposure is carefully considered in the planting location. When pests threaten a plant, a mitigation plan is implemented.
For all of this effort, the plants provide their caretaker a sense of awe at the seasonal beauty of nature. Growth and maturity make the landscape more self-sufficient, but the overseer’s job is never done.
So long for now.
